Family

Errol Laurence Miller is the son of Percy and Joyce Miller of Kingston, Jamaica.  He has five brothers and five sisters. He is married to Sharon, has three children: Garth, Yekengale, and Catherine. Garth is married to Andree (nee Chase) and they have four children: Phillip, Jhanelle, Gabrielle, and Chantelle.

Primary School

Errol received his primary education at Central Branch and Half-Way-Tree All Age Schools. He represented Half-Way-Tree All Age School at cricket as a wicketkeeper and batsman. He also represented the school in the All-Island Elocution Contest and won first place in the under twelve-years-old category. From these early years, Miller was known as a sportsman.

High School

Errol graduated from Half-Way-Tree All Age School and went on to Calabar High School. There he received his secondary education. He was successful in both the University of Cambridge School Certificate and University of Cambridge Higher School Certificate Examinations. While at Calabar, Errol represented the school at athletics, cricket, and football. In athletics, he held the records in hurdles, Class 3 and Class 2, was on the track team at the Boys’ Athletic Championship for five years, including being a Class 2 member of the team that won the Championships in 1955.

In 1957, he was a member of the winning Medley Relay Team at Boys Champs. He also played on the School’s  Sunlight Cricket Team for five years and was  Captain in the last year. He was selected and played on the All Schools Team for two years and in the second year was invited for Trials for selection to the Jamaica Cricket Team. Errol made it to the final trials, but did not make the Jamaican Team.

At Calabar, Miller was a fast bowler.  He also started to play Senior Cup Cricket for Lucas, while still at Calabar. In Sixth Form, he was a Prefect and the House Captain of Athens. During his stay at the school, he was awarded several prizes at the Annual Prize Giving. On several occasions, he received the prize for being the best all-around student, based on performance in academics, sports and participation in school activities.

Undergraduate

Upon leaving Calabar, he entered the University College of the West Indies, UCWI. He was one recipient of fifty Scholarships offered by the Government of Jamaica to UCWI in 1958. At that time the University College was affiliated to London University in England. He was admitted to the Faculty of Natural Sciences. In his first year at UCWI, Miller won the Prize awarded to the top performing student in the Faculty of Natural Science, having obtained distinctions in Botany, Chemistry and Zoology. He graduated in 1961 with a B.Sc. degree in Botany and Zoology. He represented the University College at cricket, football and athletics and was awarded colours for cricket. Errol also served as Vice President of the Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship, IVCF.

Graduate

After graduating from UCWI, he taught at Excelsior High School for five years. During this period he became Head of the Science Department and also Head of the Lower School, that is, Forms 1 to 3. He coached the School’s Colts and Sunlight Cup cricket team, which won the Cup in one year, and the School’s Colts football team. He was also the sponsor of the Inter-Schools Christian Fellowship group at the School. In 1963-64 he was granted study leave to read for the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education of the University of the West Indies, which he obtained with Distinctions in Theory and Practice. On returning to Excelsior, he registered and read for the Higher Diploma in Education and the Masters of Arts in Education of the University of the West Indies as a part-time student and was awarded the Master’s Degree with Distinction.
